basic information
Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) has a transmission wavelength range from visible light and red to far infrared, covering 600nm to 16μm. Compared to other infrared transmission materials, it has lower thermal absorption and is resistant to thermal shock, making it widely used as a transmission material for infrared lasers, such as CO2 lasers. Its low wavelength dispersion also makes it ideal for thermal imaging and FLIR (Forward Looking InfraRed) lenses. On the downside, its high specific gravity (5.27g/cm3) makes it unsuitable for optical systems that require lightweight materials. Additionally, being a soft material (Knoop hardness 120), it is prone to scratching and requires special care during product handling, fixing, or cleaning. Therefore, it is generally not suitable for use in harsh environments. *You can download the catalog from Edmund Optics Japan, which features this product, from the link below.
