basic information
Silicon (Si), a semiconductor material, is commonly used in infrared optical systems that utilize the wavelength range of 3 to 5 μm. Due to its high thermal conductivity, lightweight, and hardness, Si is also used as a substrate for laser mirrors. Its refractive index is relatively high at around 3.4 in the aforementioned wavelength range, resulting in significant transmission loss due to surface reflection (Fresnel reflection). Therefore, anti-reflective coatings are typically required. Edmund Optics' Si windows employ anti-reflective coatings that effectively function in the 3 to 5 μm range. Uncoated windows can be used as intermediate products when custom coatings are applied. Furthermore, Si has a specific gravity of 2.33 g/cm³, which is less than half that of Ge or ZnSe, making it the lightest material among infrared transmission materials. This greatly contributes to the lightweight design of optical systems.
