"ONSPOT" is the latest and groundbreaking tire chain system from Sweden in Northern Europe. Unlike traditional chains that wrap around tires, it can be operated with the push of a button. In February 2018, heavy snowfall hit the Hokuriku region, causing approximately 1,500 vehicles to be stranded over a distance of more than 45 km, particularly around the border of Fukui and Ishikawa Prefectures, taking a considerable number of days to resolve. In recent years, 60% of the stranded vehicles have been large vehicles, and even with winter tires installed, many have become stuck, especially in sections where the gradient exceeds 5%. In response to this situation, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced a policy to amend the signage regulations based on the Road Act, mandating the installation of tire chains for vehicles using winter tires on highways and national roads where stranding is a concern starting this winter.
