The duplex stainless steel used in marine scrubber piping is characterized by its high corrosion resistance and higher strength compared to austenitic stainless steel, allowing for thinner design plate thicknesses and cost reductions in piping. The Marine Pollution Prevention Treaty globally regulates the sulfur content in fuel oil, and it has been decided that this regulation will be further strengthened after January 2020. As a countermeasure to this regulation, the installation of SOx scrubbers, which can remove sulfur content, allows for the continued use of high-sulfur C heavy oil, which has been the mainstay of conventional marine fuel. There, a duplex stainless steel with excellent corrosion resistance is employed.
