After quenching, hardness adjustment is performed through tempering.
Quenching and tempering consist of two processes: quenching and tempering. There are various types of quenching, including vacuum quenching, oil quenching, and salt quenching, and by performing these in conjunction with tempering, we can correct warping and adjust hardness. The optimal quenching method is determined based on the type of steel, size, and shape. We accommodate small lots of various types and short delivery times. One common question we receive from processing companies is, "How much should we process before heat treatment?" Please consult with us before processing. We will provide suggestions based on the drawings. ● We can perform quenching on various types of steel (such as S45C, SCM440, SUJ2, SK3, SKS3, SKD11, SUS440, SKH51, etc.). ● We select the optimal quenching method based on the type, size, and shape of the steel material. ● Our focus is primarily on heat treatment for very small products (a few tens of grams) to medium-sized products (up to 50 kg), but through collaboration with our heat treatment network, we can accommodate all types of heat treatment. ● Considering the final quality after heat treatment, we can accept requests starting from the earlier processes of material procurement and machining.

basic information
What is quenching and tempering? Quenching aims to harden steel. Steel containing a certain amount of carbon (such as carbon steel for mechanical structures and alloy steel) is heated to form an austenitic structure and then rapidly cooled to transform it into martensite. Martensite is a very hard structure, which increases hardness but, on the other hand, makes it brittle and prone to cracking. Tempering is performed to impart toughness (ductility) to the hardened steel. Hardness is adjusted, and warping is corrected at the same time. During tempering, the martensitic structure is reheated and then cooled after a certain period. Through this quenching and tempering heat treatment, the mechanical properties of steel can be adjusted. In other words, quenching increases hardness, while tempering decreases hardness but increases toughness, thereby improving mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, reduction, and impact resistance. Quenching and tempering are performed on steel used for wear-resistant materials, cutting tools, and high-strength components.

Applications/Examples of results
Main materials applicable to quenching and tempering: ● S45C, SK3, SKS3, SUJ2, SCM435, etc. For items likely to warp or bend, salt is used; normally, oil quenching is performed. ● SKD11, SUS440, SUS420J2, STAVAX, etc. The impact of warping and shrinkage is minimized depending on the setting method. For plastic molds, dimensional accuracy treatment is performed. ● SKH51 (high-speed steel), HAP40, etc. Processing is generally done three times a week using a vacuum furnace.

Company information
Heat treatment deals with natural phenomena and imparts the desired functions to steel. Since we cannot change the natural phenomena themselves, the success of heat treatment relies entirely on what happens "before heat treatment." At Mutou Industries, we emphasize education based on "knowledge-based experience," demonstrating our capabilities in hypothesis formulation, proposal-making, and responsiveness. Headquarters and Factory: Yamato City, Kanagawa Prefecture Tokai Office: Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture Tohoku Office: Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture Special Class Metal Heat Treatment Technicians: 2 First Class Metal Heat Treatment Technicians: 15 Second Class Metal Heat Treatment Technicians: 8 Third Class Metal Heat Treatment Technicians: 2 Second Class Metal Materials Testing Technicians: 2 (as of February 2024) We collaborate with processing partner companies to provide consistent support from machining to heat treatment. If you provide us with the drawings, we will ensure the quality after heat treatment in collaboration with the machining industry. We will enter into a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) as necessary.
