When culturing and testing for Clostridium perfringens, it is usually necessary to conduct the culture under anaerobic conditions; however, this medium allows for the selective enrichment and culture of Clostridium perfringens even under aerobic conditions. Many conventional selective media contain kanamycin, and such media cannot detect kanamycin-sensitive strains that have been increasingly reported in recent years. This medium does not contain kanamycin, making it possible to detect kanamycin-sensitive strains. Additionally, this medium not only selectively enriches Clostridium perfringens but also allows for the confirmation of three biochemical characteristics: lactose fermentation ability, lecithinase reaction, and hydrogen sulfide production ability.

Clostridium species are obligate anaerobes, and unlike the cultivation of facultative anaerobes such as Escherichia coli, it is necessary to consider the cultivation conditions and equipment used. Additionally, compared to aerobic bacteria, it takes longer to obtain test results. Clostridium perfringens (common name: Welch's bacillus) is known as a food poisoning pathogen, and large-scale food poisoning incidents are often reported. Due to its ability to form heat-resistant spores, it is frequently detected in heat-processed foods such as curry and stews that are prepared in large quantities, as well as in processed foods. It is believed to cause food poisoning due to improper handling of food, such as leaving it at room temperature for extended periods after cooking.
