Please make use of the GBS carrier survey!
Sample collection is ideally performed using a single swab to collect a sample from the "vaginal entrance," followed by the same swab or another swab to collect from the "inside of the anus" or "around the anus." In detection methods using commonly used blood agar media, cases have been recognized where isolation becomes difficult due to the presence of contaminants in the anal area or surrounding area. In such cases, we offer "Chromagar Strept B," which has strong selectivity and high differentiation capability. This is an enzyme substrate medium where GBS grows in a characteristic "lavender" color. Non-hemolytic GBS can also be detected. We also provide "Chromagar Candida/Strep B fraction medium," which allows for culturing vaginal secretions from pregnant women in one plate. Additionally, in cases where the GBS load is low, there is concern that it may be overlooked in direct isolation cultures. We offer "Lambquick GBS," a selective enrichment medium for GBS that allows for rapid amplification.

basic information
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is detected in approximately 10-30% of pregnant women's vaginal/intestinal samples and can cause vertical infections in mothers and infants (such as pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis). The estimated probability of an infected infant being born from a GBS carrier mother is around 2%, and this frequency is not low. For this reason, GBS carrier screening is conducted in vaginal secretion culture tests for pregnant women.
