basic information
FMB Oxford is a leading company headquartered in Oxford, UK, specializing in the manufacture and sale of detectors, including beamlines, monochromators, mirror systems, and scintillators. The history of FMB Oxford began in the early 1990s, during which it supplied numerous beamlines to cutting-edge third-generation synchrotron facilities (such as Helios1, ANKA, ESRF). Currently, the site spans over 2,260 square meters and includes offices, manufacturing space, a UHV cleaning area, and a large clean room, ensuring product quality through rigorous temperature and humidity control. The products, which have continued to grow and improve alongside a long history, still provide new solutions to many researchers in order to support the demands of the scientific field.

FMB Beamlines | A specialized team of scientists and engineers possesses advanced skills in the design, manufacture, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning of beamlines. Engineering skills include beamline design, optical design, control system design, ray tracing, high thermal load engineering, finite element analysis, vibration analysis, control engineering, and UHV assembly and testing. |
CVD Diamond windows | Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamonds provide extreme hardness, high thermal conductivity, chemical inertness, and high transparency over a very wide spectral range. They are stronger and harder than beryllium, have lower thermal expansion, and are less toxic, making them ideal for UHV isolation windows in X-ray beamlines. |
Bremsstrahlung Safety Shutter | The bremsstrahlung shutter incorporates lead or tungsten blocks to absorb bremsstrahlung radiation. The bremsstrahlung shutter comes with pneumatic actuators and can be configured with various options such as high-speed actuators and beryllium windows. These can be integrated with photon shutters or other beamline components as needed. |
Collimators | The variable collimator is equipped with two sets of XY slits with blades designed to accommodate the expected thermal load. Collimators can also be mounted on stands that add four electric motion axes: height, horizontal position, pitch, and yaw. |
Slits | Three types of slits are available: Cooled, Precision, and In-flange. The standard cooled slit consists of two slit blades that move together in opposite directions to change the aperture. The slits are driven by stepper motors and are equipped with limit switches and datum switches. Encoders can be installed as an option for continuous position feedback. |
X-Ray Filter | Functions include studying surface reflections, matching the scattering intensity of samples to the linear range of detectors, adjusting X-ray exposure in experiments requiring specific X-ray doses, or acting as a beam stopper to minimize sample damage. Depending on experimental requirements, the filter unit can be evacuated or filled with He. |
