The retroreflective prism (corner cube prism) is used in applications where precise alignment is difficult or cumbersome. The retroreflective prism returns light to the direction of the incident light (light source) regardless of the orientation of the prism. Optical mirrors need to be oriented for vertical incidence to return light to the direction of the light source, but in the case of the retroreflective prism, as long as the light hits the incident surface, it will return to the light source direction regardless of how the prism is oriented.
