Pseudomonas species are ubiquitous bacteria found in soil, plants, freshwater, and marine habitats. Many Pseudomonas species can proliferate at low temperatures, which may lead to contamination of refrigerated foods and pharmaceuticals. These psychrophilic Pseudomonas species cause spoilage of foods such as dairy products, eggs, meat, and fish, but they rarely cause food poisoning. On the other hand, among Pseudomonas species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause sepsis, pneumonia, wound infections, and urinary tract infections in individuals with compromised immune defenses. Since much of the transmission of this bacterium is associated with water, it serves as an effective indicator of disinfection efficacy in pool water, hot spring water, and environmental water.
