Trustworthy Bakelite, PL-PEV - Quality proven by outstanding low water absorption and a long history.
■Characteristics of Bakelite PL-PEV Bakelite PL-PEV is a product that boasts particularly low water absorption among phenolic resin-based laminated sheets. This characteristic is especially evident when compared to the paper Bakelite PL-PEM. Since the water absorption rate varies with the thickness of the sheet, a 1mm thick sheet and a 50mm thick sheet will yield different results in weight ratio, even if the rate of water penetration is the same. This difference is evaluated based on JIS standards. Additionally, there is no cloth-reinforced Bakelite equivalent to PL-PEV, so depending on the application, paper Bakelite is used for insulation, while cloth Bakelite is used for mechanical purposes. Due to its high quality, PL-PEV is also referred to as "the top grade of Bakelite," but compared to PL-PEM, it has the characteristic that the saw teeth wear out more easily when cut with a saw.

■Bakelite PL-PEV with a History of Trust PL-PEV is widely used in the railway sector, with a very deep historical background. During the era of steam locomotives, Bakelite was trusted as an early material used for the insulation of electric lights, unmatched by any alternatives. Throughout over 100 years of railway history, this material continues to play an important role, with some instances of it still being used intact today. With the evolution of insulating materials, it is sometimes replaced by premixes of polyester-based resins and glass, but the reliability of PL-PEV is still highly valued. ■Examples of Bakelite Use and Processing There are also Bakelite products suitable for food applications that comply with Ministry of Health announcements. When phenolic resin is burned at high temperatures, it takes on a very hard, rock-like form. Specific processing examples include screw machining and products that comply with food sanitation laws, with its properties being utilized in many fields. Additionally, detailed information on the thickness tolerances and physical properties of Bakelite sheets is provided.
