Gallium nitride (GaN) is attracting attention as a next-generation "wide bandgap semiconductor material," in addition to being a blue LED material, similar to silicon carbide (SiC). GaN is not created from a single wafer like Si or SiC; instead, it is formed on thin films through epitaxial growth on Si or sapphire. Therefore, if one wants to evaluate thermal conductivity, it must be assessed in the thin film state. Additionally, methods for creating high-purity crystals have been developed, but their size seems to remain at a microscopic scale, about the size of a fingernail tip. The Thermal Microscope TM3 is compatible with measuring thermal conductivity/thermal diffusivity for both of the aforementioned forms. While we cannot provide detailed numerical values here, values corresponding closely to literature values have been obtained. For example, for microscopic sizes, evaluation of particles around 100μm is possible (example of SiC particles). For thin films, measurements can be taken from the submicron order (example of superconducting thin films). Our Thermal Microscope TM3 is a device capable of measuring the thermal conductivity of thin films (from 100nm) and the thermal diffusivity in microscopic regions (from 3μm).
