We have been selected for the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award at the 2024 Industrial Standardization Project Awards! Bethel Co., Ltd. utilized the new market creation standardization system to establish JIS R 7240 (Method for measuring thermal diffusivity of graphite sheets using laser spot periodic heating radiation temperature measurement method for heat dissipation) in November 2018, addressing the lack of evaluation standards for measuring the thermal diffusivity of graphite sheets. As a result, proper performance evaluation of graphite sheets has been implemented, leading to the elimination of inferior products and significantly enhancing the reliability of the company's products in the market. [Measurement Example] <Insulation substrate material for electronic circuits> Thermal conductivity of polyimide sheet

Thermal conductivity distribution measurement and the anisotropy of thermal diffusivity in each part can be evaluated.

Here is an example of evaluating thin polyimide sheets. Polyimide sheets are resin materials primarily used as insulating substrates and insulating layers in electronic circuits. This time, we measured the thermal diffusivity in the thickness direction using a ThermoWave Analyzer TA on a sheet with a thickness of 7.5 μm. Even with the same polyimide sheet, there are significant thermal differences depending on the thickness. When comparing examples of 25 μm and 7.5 μm using the measure of thermal diffusion time, there is nearly a tenfold difference. The thinner sheet diffuses heat in one-tenth the time. For in-plane measurements, it is relatively easy to achieve time resolution since the distance between the heating point and the detection point can be established. However, for thickness direction measurements, it is necessary to detect rapid temperature changes, which affects the basic performance of the equipment. Traditional measurement methods make the measurement itself difficult. Additionally, at a thickness of 7.5 μm, the thermal effects of surface blackening treatment cannot be ignored, so we have devised methods to minimize these effects during sample preparation and measurement. The measurement results are as follows: Thermal diffusivity in the thickness direction: 0.103 × 10^-6 m²s^-1. This value is approximately 30% lower compared to the 25 μm thick polyimide.

Basics of Thermal Conductivity Measurement

Understanding the mechanism of heat transfer and effectively dissipating heat is important! Here we introduce various methods for measuring thermal properties.

Due to factors such as "miniaturization = fanless design" and "widespread use of power devices = increased heat generation," thermal issues have become important. Thermal conductivity measurement can be broadly classified into two categories: "steady-state method" and "transient method." The steady-state method provides direct thermal conductivity values and requires relatively large samples. How to choose grease that can be used in high-temperature environments

Various greases are used for the lubrication of molds and machine parts, but in high-temperature environments, the performance of standard lithium greases significantly decreases, leading to issues such as seizure and galling. So, how should one choose "high-temperature greases"? First, the heat resistance temperature should be noted. Typical lithium-based greases have a limit of around 200°C, but in mold environments, conditions can reach 400°C to 800°C. In such cases, high-temperature greases that use heat-resistant additives or special base oils are essential. Second, oxidation stability is also important. When the oil oxidizes due to rising temperatures, the lubricating film is lost, and component wear progresses rapidly. Third, the initial break-in performance should not be overlooked. The ability to form a smooth film during startup at high temperatures can greatly affect the lifespan. For example, the "Golden Grease Series" can handle mold environments up to 800°C due to its hybrid design of inorganic and organic components. It allows for lubrication, release, and rust prevention all at once, leading to more efficient mold maintenance.
