We will achieve optical characteristics that have not been realized before by periodically changing the refractive index. Conventional optical filters (optical thin films) consist of alternating layers of high-refractive-index and low-refractive-index films, which exhibit specific optical properties. In contrast, notch filters (band-stop filters) are deposition products designed to periodically change the refractive index in the thickness direction. A characteristic feature is that no optically unnecessary ripple occurs outside the stopband. We can achieve optical characteristics that were not possible with previous optical thin film processing.
