Wisdom Series for Caregiving Without Strain
What would you do if your parent living far away suddenly collapsed and needed care? Would you bring your parent to your home, quit your job to return to your hometown to provide care, or place your parent in a nursing facility? Some people make hasty decisions in such situations. When the instructor's grandmother collapsed due to cervical cancer and her mother simultaneously developed dementia, the chosen method was long-distance caregiving. For over 11 years, she has been providing care from a distance between Iwate and Tokyo, opting for home care rather than a facility. This presentation will introduce seven patterns of caregiving for parents living far away and will explain in detail how to deal with the troubles of long-distance caregiving. Instructor: Hiroshi Kudo (Dementia Caregiver and Dementia Life Partner Level 2) Since 2012, the instructor, who lives in Tokyo, has been providing home care for her mother, who has dementia and a difficult illness (Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease), traveling to Iwate Prefecture. Along the way, she also cared for her grandmother with dementia (requiring care level 3) and her father with malignant lymphoma (requiring care level 5) until their passing. Her caregiving experiences and innovations have been featured in many media outlets, including NHK's "News 7" and "Asaichi."
