"Shot and grit" shape of abrasives
The difference between shot and grit lies not in the material or processing method, but in the shape. There are various shapes of abrasives (grinding materials) used in blast processing, and the processing effect and finish can vary greatly depending on the shape. "About the shapes of blast abrasives" The shapes of abrasives can be broadly divided into three types: 1. Spherical / Round Cut This shape is cylindrical or polygonal with edges ground to resemble a sphere, referred to as "shot," "beads," or "round cut," with many products named with the material name before or after. Example: Steel shot, stainless beads 2. Cylindrical / Wire Cut This shape is cylindrical, created by finely cutting wire material. It is referred to as "wire cut" or "cut wire," with many products named with the material name before or after. Example: Steel cut wire, stainless cut wire 3. Polygonal / Sharp Angle This shape has many sharp angles and is characterized by a polygon with pointed corners. It is referred to as "grit," with many products named with the material name before or after. Example: Steel grit, stainless grit

basic information
"Difference in Processing Effects Based on Shape" The shape of the abrasive material significantly affects the finish, processing effect, and degree of damage after processing. 1. Spherical/Round Cut Due to its spherical shape, it allows for processing that minimizes damage to the workpiece. It creates round indentations by processing the surface as if striking it. It is often used for processing effects such as creating fine unevenness, removing burrs, and eliminating residual stress, such as in shot peening. 2. Cylindrical/Wire Cut With a cylindrical shape and edges on the circular part and cutting surface, the degree of damage to the workpiece is intermediate between spherical and polygonal shapes. While the edges of the cutting surface are not sharp, it can roughen the surface. It is often used for burr removal since it does not provide high cutting force. 3. Polygonal/Sharp Angle Due to its irregular and sharp-angled shape, it has strong grinding power and creates random unevenness on the surface of the workpiece, resulting in a significant degree of damage. It forms an optimal anchor pattern that greatly enhances adhesion for paints and adhesives. It is often used for surface preparation before painting (substrate treatment), removal of old paint films or resins, and rust removal.
