In Japan, it is not uncommon for temperatures to exceed 38°C in the summer. During the summer of 2020, at an oil refinery located in Kawasaki City, Japan, temperature control became difficult due to the aging of its cooling towers, resulting in cooling water temperatures exceeding 28°C. This led to an increase in the flow temperature of gasoline, reduced flexibility in the refinery's fuel blending, and ultimately caused economic losses due to a shortage of octane and a shrinking gasoline pool. To overcome this low-margin situation, it was essential to maintain production levels, and reducing processing capacity or gasoline production was not an option. There was no time to incorporate new cooling equipment within the limited timeframe, and a solution was needed to quickly implement a cooling system through some other means.

The solution chosen to address this issue was Aggreko's solution. We have previously been involved in our customers' business revitalization projects, making us the ideal partner to overcome this challenge. The solutions required for each project are different, and similarly this time, a customized solution was needed. To solve the problem, Aggreko collaborated with the global engineering team, the Aggreko process services team, and local technicians, working together with the refinery's engineering team to propose solutions that included the following: - Assistance with hose management for cost optimization - Resolution of issues related to installation area - Installation of detectors in buffer tanks to monitor and reduce the risk of contaminated water inflow due to corrosion of heat exchangers - Optimization of water flow to maintain gasoline flow rate/temperature Through a thorough approach, Aggreko provided a comprehensive turnkey solution by placing air-cooled chillers around the customer's heat exchangers, supplying 875 kW of cooling capacity, and lowering the flow temperature from the reactor to 22°C.
