Coatings are widely used in various industrial fields for purposes such as protecting underlying layers, manufacturing electronic devices, and enhancing the surface properties of materials. Due to their diverse applications, coatings are extensively researched, but understanding their mechanical properties can sometimes be challenging. Coating failure can occur at the micro/nanometer level due to interactions between the surface and the atmosphere, cohesive failure, or poor adhesion at the interface with the substrate. One method for consistently testing coating failure is the scratch test. By gradually increasing the load, it becomes possible to quantitatively compare cohesive failure of the coating (e.g., cracking) and adhesive failure (e.g., peeling).
