Once, the foundry industry was a sacred profession. Those involved were called "Oichimonoshi," and there are records that they were granted various privileges by the local lords. Before casting large metal objects like temple bells, rituals were conducted, and the master foundrymen would attend in formal attire. Such customs, which continued from the Middle Ages until the third year of the Meiji era, of course, do not remain in modern society.
