Support for the first initiative in the fisheries industry to 'recycle plastic fishing gear on our own'
Delivery of plastic recycling equipment to Ainang Fisheries Cooperative begins On October 19, 2022, Elcom Co., Ltd. (Sapporo, Hokkaido) began delivering equipment (e-PEP system) for reducing and recycling used fishing gear to the Ainang Fisheries Cooperative (hereinafter referred to as Ainang Fisheries). Recycling is scheduled to start on the 24th. Elcom, which promotes the Clean Ocean Project, supports Ainang Fisheries' efforts to "connect and pass on a sustainable fishery industry to future generations." ◆ Recycling technology for dirty buoys The e-PEP system reduces the volume of used buoys by 96% and compresses them, while also effectively utilizing them as fuel for a special boiler, which is expected to reduce the use of fossil fuels. When used buoys are fed into the system, they are automatically stored as fuel pellets in a bulk bag, and the processing capacity still has room even if all used buoys are turned into pellets. The reuse of dirty expanded polystyrene is particularly challenging, but this is the second case following the recycling of floating foam debris in Tsushima City in 2021, marking the first initiative by a fisheries cooperative to take action with awareness of producer responsibility.
