1-Thioglycerol is a chemical product used for surface treatment of electronic materials, and it is almost non-irritating and non-toxic at the concentrations typically used as a pharmaceutical additive. Not only is it used as a stabilizer and antioxidant for antibiotics, but due to its excellent reducing ability, it can also cut the S-S bonds in hair, making it suitable for use as a curling agent (permanent wave solution). Additionally, it can reduce metal oxides, and is widely used as a rust preventive and rust remover for metals. It is used as an antibacterial preservative and has a high chain transfer ability, making it useful as a polymerization regulator in the radical polymerization of water-soluble vinyl monomers.
