Characteristics of Electroplated Nickel Nickel plating is said to have begun in 1843 when nickel was deposited from a bath of nickel sulfate and ammonium sulfate, and it is considered that industrial nickel plating was first carried out by Adams in 1869. Characteristics of Nickel Plating Compatible with materials such as aluminum, iron-based alloys, copper alloys, titanium, and resin materials. (Please consult for other materials) A high-purity nickel plating film can be obtained. The film has high hardness (the coating is hard). A ferromagnetic plating film can be obtained. Excellent glossiness (aesthetic quality). Excellent corrosion resistance (rust prevention). Soldering is possible. Excellent heat resistance. Compliant with RoHS directives. The hardness of the nickel plating film obtained through electroplating varies significantly depending on conditions such as additives. Dull nickel plating has a hardness of approximately HV200 to 250. Glossy nickel plating has a hardness of approximately HV400 to 500.

Palladium plating

Palladium plating, capable of accommodating from 0.1μm to 4μm.

Palladium (Pd), a metal belonging to the platinum group, has a melting point of 1555°C, a density of 12.16 g/cm³, a Vickers hardness of HV 250–300, and is a noble metal with a face-centered cubic structure. It does not discolor in the atmosphere and has excellent chemical resistance. Pure palladium plating maintains the unique noble hue characteristic of the platinum group, does not rust or discolor in the atmosphere, and has high chemical stability, being resistant to acids and alkalis.

One of the appearance troubles of plating is "gloss unevenness." Have you ever experienced that the finish of the plating is not uniform, that the gloss differs between the front and back of the product, or that there are differences in gloss between lots? Various factors influence the finish of plating, but what kind of differences in conditions can cause gloss unevenness? Factors that affect the gloss of plating include: A) Differences in the surface roughness of the product substrate B) Residual oil, dirt, or scale on the product C) Differences in plating film thickness D) Management of the plating solution (such as pH and gloss agent addition) E) Etching during pre-treatment of plating Possible countermeasures for each factor include: a) Uniforming surface roughness through polishing or blasting b) Reviewing pre-treatment conditions and barrel polishing or blasting c) Reviewing plating conditions, racking methods, and jigs d) Regular liquid analysis and appropriate replenishment and renewal e) Reviewing pre-treatment conditions (such as pickling) Since the treatment processes and conditions vary among plating companies, it can be difficult to respond even if the cause is understood.
