Tension Spring SWP-BΦ5.0 Left-Handed

It is a rare case where a "left-handed" spring is used in a tension spring.

The material used is "Piano Wire Type B, SWP-B," with a wire diameter of Φ5.0. The body part is wound using a heart gold type winding machine, while the hook part is shaped by hand. After heat treatment, an electroless nickel plating is applied as a rust prevention treatment. The winding direction of this spring is "left-handed." To determine the winding direction, if you stand the spring upright and look at it from the side, if the coil material is winding upwards to the right, it is right-handed; if it is winding upwards to the left, it is left-handed (according to JIS standards). For compression springs and tension springs, unless otherwise specified, they will be manufactured as right-handed. Compression spring open end

The end shapes of compression springs are "closed end" and "open end."

The typical type is a closed end, where the tip of the coil at the end is in contact with the next coil. This single turn at the end is called a "seat coil" (zamaki). The seat coil serves to improve the stability of the spring when it is upright, but it does not have any functional role as a spring. The turns that function as a spring are those excluding the seat coil, and the number of turns that effectively function as a spring is referred to as the effective number of turns. The spring in the photo is an atypical "open end." The tip of the coil at the end is not in contact with the next coil, creating a gap (indicated by the arrow). The seat coils at both ends are less than one turn, resulting in fewer seat coils compared to a closed end. The reason for deliberately adopting a non-typical open end is mainly in the following cases: 1) When you do not want to change the spring constant (want to keep the effective number of turns fixed), and 2) When you want to keep the height at which the spring is in contact low (want to reduce the total number of turns). While reducing the seat coils may worsen the stability of the spring, it allows you to maintain the spring constant while keeping the contact height low.

Counting the number of turns in a spring

Care is needed in counting the number of turns of a spring.

I will count the number of coils in the photo of the compression spring. The number of lines = the number of circles = 5, therefore the number of coils = 5, but it is important to note that this is not the case. In the case of springs, one complete turn is counted as one coil. If you start counting from the left end, it will be one coil at the red circle. The star-marked area is still less than one coil, approximately 0.5 coils. The number of coils in this spring = 4 coils. By the way, the one coil at both ends is in contact with the adjacent coil and is called a "seat coil." The role of the seat coil is to improve stability when standing, and the seat coil itself does not function as a spring.
