Case Study of 3D Similar Shape Search System Implementation at Murata Machinery, Ltd.

Aiming to reduce the time for similar product searches from 30 minutes to 5 minutes! The time spent drawing blueprints from scratch will be redirected to new development.

In the Fiber Machinery Division, the drawings that have been issued are managed using our in-house developed drawing management system. It is difficult to achieve standardization of parts across different models from the large number of drawings available, leading designers to feel that "it is faster to create new drawings than to search for similar ones," which has a significant impact on lead times and costs. As the development of new models progresses, improving the efficiency of design operations and reducing the number of drawings have become challenges. To address this, we considered our tool "SS4M" as an efficiency tool for quickly finding drawings and similar parts from the vast accumulation of drawings, as well as a tool to promote parts standardization. Not only does it have a similar shape search function, but it also offers 3D shape comparison capabilities, high similarity accuracy, and excellent usability.
