Fine structure analysis | TEM/STEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy Analysis)

Nano to angstrom resolution! Observation of fine morphology and composition analysis at the atomic level.

TEM/STEM is an analytical method that uses an electron beam to image samples. The spatial resolution of TEM/STEM is approximately 1 to 2 Å. High-energy electrons (80 to 200 keV) can penetrate electron-transparent samples (up to about 100 nm thick). While the spatial resolution of TEM/STEM is superior to that of SEM, it often requires complex sample preparation. Additionally, in recent years, the introduction of AC-STEM (STEM with spherical aberration-corrected lenses) has enabled higher resolution analysis compared to conventional STEM. EAG Laboratories owns more than 20 TEM/STEM instruments and over 30 FIB-SEM systems for sample preparation. We also have multiple EDS/EELS systems for elemental analysis. With a sufficient number of facilities for analysis, we can always respond to TEM/STEM analysis requests with short turnaround times (standard delivery: 6 to 8 business days / expedited delivery: upon inquiry).

State analysis of cathode active materials using XPS.

For the evaluation of lithium-ion battery materials! Analyzing chemical bonding states using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Regarding the NMC reagent, an evaluation of the valence of metal oxides was conducted through XPS state analysis. Qualitative analysis was performed on commercially available NMC reagents, yielding values for the NiMnCo ratio that are close to the specifications of the reagent. Additionally, F and C, which are thought to originate from the binder component, were also detected. 【Analysis of NMC Reagent (Partial)】 ■ The main oxides of Ni, Mn, and Co are inferred to be NiO (Ni2+), MnO2 (Mn4+), and Co3O4 (a mixed valence of Co2+ and Co3+). ■ C, O, and F show a peak shift consistent with organic compounds thought to originate from the binder. ■ Peak assignments are inferred based on various literature and databases. *For more details, please download the PDF or feel free to contact us.

Reproducibility of SIMS analysis data

It is possible to evaluate the amount of impurities with high reproducibility.

In the manufacturing of semiconductor devices, the control of impurities such as dopants is a crucial process. When focusing on ion implantation, even slight differences can affect quality and performance, making precise control necessary. The high reproducibility of SIMS analysis is ideal for the development and maintenance of these processes.

[Analysis Case] Organic Contamination Analysis of Materials

We will analyze trace amounts of organic contaminants adhered to the material using TD-GC/MS.

In precision machinery, vacuum devices, and semiconductor manufacturing equipment, contamination of the materials used can adversely affect product quality and the stable operation of the equipment. In this case, we handled glass components with disposable gloves of different types and analyzed the organic contamination adhered to the glass components using GC/MS analysis with a gas concentration device. By evaluating the contamination of the materials, it is possible to identify the components causing defects, eliminate the sources of material contamination, and consider changes to the materials.

AFM Infrared Spectroscopic Analysis

Infrared spectroscopy is a method for obtaining information about molecular structure by measuring infrared absorption due to molecular vibrations.

This method allows for simultaneous measurement of the sample's surface roughness and mechanical property distribution, as well as infrared absorption images (functional group distribution) at selected absorption bands, by conducting measurements in conjunction with the AFM system. AFM-IR has the following features: - It enables evaluation with very high spatial resolution (on the nanoscale), allowing for spectral and imaging measurements in small areas. - Similar analyses can be performed by using the FT-IR library.

What can be understood from molecular dynamics calculations

We will introduce the target of analysis, the physical property information obtained, and examples of analysis that can be understood from molecular dynamics calculations.

In molecular dynamics simulations, the motion of particles (atoms and molecules) is simulated by applying Newton's equations of motion to individual particles, and the physical properties of the system are calculated based on statistical thermodynamics, along with evaluating the response and dynamics to external fields such as temperature and pressure. The results obtained are effective for predicting the structure and properties of materials and contribute to solving problems in research and development involving materials engineering and molecular biology.

[Analysis Case] Analysis of Functional Ingredient Concentration in Food

Evaluation case of resveratrol concentration in red wine.

Resveratrol is a type of polyphenol and a substance that has garnered attention as a natural antioxidant. Resveratrol, which is abundant in grape skins, is also present in red wine made from whole grape skins. This document presents an analytical case in which the amount of resveratrol in three types of commercially available red wine was measured and compared using the LC/MS/MS method.

[Analysis Case] Composition and Impurity Analysis of Thin Films, Bulk, and Powder Materials

Quantitative analysis of main components and metallic impurity elements in IGZO using CP-MS.

IGZO thin films, which are transparent oxide semiconductors, are being researched and developed as TFT materials for displays. IGZO is a material whose properties change based on the composition of the thin film and the amount of impurities within it, making it important to obtain information about the composition and impurities. This time, we will introduce a case where the main components and the amounts of metallic impurity elements in IGZO powder, the raw material for the thin film, were evaluated with high precision using ICP-MS. Analysis is possible not only for powders but also for bulk and thin films.

[Analysis Case] Evaluation of Resistance Values and Li Distribution in Secondary Battery Cathodes

Distribution of resistance values in the electrode cross-section, visualization of conduction paths, and comparison with ion distribution.

The charge and discharge characteristics of lithium-ion secondary batteries are influenced by electronic conductivity. I will introduce a case where the decreased conductivity of active materials, due to degradation or blockage of conduction paths, was visualized as a resistance value distribution using SSRM. By comparing the results obtained from SSRM with the elemental distribution of Li and other elements measured by TOF-SIMS, it is possible to confirm the correlation between resistance values and elemental distribution. Additionally, it is feasible to classify conductive additives and binders based on resistance values, perform statistical processing, and quantify the mixing degree for each material.

[Analysis Case] Analysis of Bacteria Using DNA Analysis

We will analyze the bacteria in the sample from DNA without isolation or culture.

Bacteria have various growth environments depending on their species, and there are many bacteria that are difficult to isolate and culture. Therefore, by extracting and analyzing DNA, which is the blueprint of life that all bacteria possess, it becomes possible to investigate the existing bacteria without isolation or culture. Here, we will introduce examples of analysis methods for sequencing bacterial DNA to infer the existing bacteria through microbiome analysis, as well as investigating bacterial numbers using real-time PCR methods.
