Identifying food components with anti-aging effects using cell assays with "Spark".

Researchers at Tokyo University of Technology's Faculty of Applied Biological Sciences are focusing on the anti-aging functions of food and studying the effects of various food components on mitochondria. Using the "Spark 10M Multi-Detection Mode Microplate Reader," they are screening compounds that promote mitochondrial activity through microplate-based cell assays. By culturing adherent cells in microplates and staining them with fluorescent dyes, changes in mitochondrial membrane potential caused by test compounds can be visualized, and changes in intracellular ROS concentration can also be measured. Additionally, multiple experiments can now typically be run at once using a 24-well microplate.
