Color Story - Foreword

To help you understand the color measurement technology based on the color recognition process!

We live surrounded by various colors in our daily lives. How can we accurately convey these colors to others? To enable anyone, anywhere, at any time, to accurately communicate the colors they see and feel, it is necessary to carefully standardize each of the conditions under which colors are recognized. In order to help you understand the color measurement techniques based on this recognition process, we have created a color story with the hope that it will be of some assistance to you. [Overview (Part)] ■ The three major elements of form are essential for information transmission: - Color, Shape, Texture ■ The foundational research in color science and the practical research outcomes of color reproduction technology have made significant contributions to building an information transmission society. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Color Story: The Three Elements of Color: Hue, Brightness, Saturation

Through the expression of tone, colors can have rich expressions!

The three primary elements of color (hue, brightness, and saturation), known as the three attributes, combine to create colors that express various tones. Tone refers to the expression of color described by adjectives such as "light - deep," "bright - dark," or "strong - weak." Through the expression of tone, colors can possess rich expressions. In other words, tone represents an intuitive impression of color that combines brightness and saturation. [Overview] ■ Three primary elements of color: hue, brightness, saturation ■ Colors created by the combination of these three elements express various tones ・ Tone: the expression of color described by adjectives such as "light - deep," "bright - dark," or "strong - weak" ■ The expression of tone gives colors a rich expression ■ Tone represents an intuitive impression of color that combines brightness and saturation *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Color Story Munsell Representation

Arrange using polar coordinates based on the three elements of hue, brightness, and saturation!

Let me introduce you to the Munsell color system. Albert H. Munsell assigned unique terms to each of the three attributes: Hue, Value, and Chroma, establishing the concept of color along with these terms. By using the three elements of hue, value, and chroma as axes and arranging them in a polar coordinate system, a three-dimensional representation of color can be created. 【Features】 ■ A method of expression systematized based on human perception ■ A system that defines the elements of color (hue, value, chroma) as perceived by humans, organized to appear perceptually equidistant ■ Established as a JIS standard ■ Color representation is noted in the order of hue, value/chroma *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Color Story: The Process of Color Recognition

Standardized as an international standard (CIE/ISO)! People perceive the color of objects through their eyes.

I will introduce the process of color recognition. Color is determined by the characteristics of light emitted from a light source and the characteristics of objects that reflect or transmit that light. If we understand the relationship between the light that enters the eye and color perception, it is possible to express color quantitatively. This is the principle of color measurement. The measurement methods for the characteristics of various lighting sources, the characteristics of objects that reflect or transmit light, and the sensitivity characteristics of the eye to light as color perception (known as color matching functions) are all standardized as international standards (CIE/ISO). [Process of Color Recognition] ■ The differences in spectral composition that enter the eye result in variations in visual perception. ■ The cause of this visual perception is due to the characteristics of the light that enters the eye, which is a property of light. ■ This light is determined by the reflection (or transmission) characteristics of the illuminated object, which is a property of the object. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Color Story: Examples of Color Tolerance

The tolerance range of colors can be expressed in terms of color difference values.

When the measured tristimulus values XYZ are converted to UCS (Uniform Color Space), they can be displayed in L*a*b* coordinates, allowing for the comparison of the magnitude of perceived color differences based on the distance between the coordinates of two colors. In other words, the acceptable range of colors can be expressed in terms of color difference values. We will introduce examples commonly used in JIS standards and various industrial sectors. 【Examples of Color Tolerances (Excerpt)】 ■ Non-evaluable area - The range of perceived color differences falls within the margin of error, even with specially calibrated color measurement instruments, making it indistinguishable by humans. ■ Identification boundary - The range of perceived color differences is within the reproducibility range of sufficiently calibrated color measurement instruments, where trained individuals can consistently identify the limits. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.

Color Story: Color Distortion Judgment Method

You can control the color while viewing the color deviation determination diagram.

The color deviation determination method is a useful color management technique for quantitatively assessing deviations in sample color from a reference value, differences in color between the previous and current lots, and the direction and positional relationship of the sample color deviation relative to the target color. This method is similar to the display of an aircraft's automatic landing guidance system. 【Steps for the Color Deviation Determination Method】 1. Set the measuring instrument to the color deviation determination display. 2. Measure the target color. 3. Measure the sample color. 4. Determine the direction and amount of color deviation. 5. Summarize the results of the color deviation determination. *For more details, please refer to the PDF document or feel free to contact us.
