However, due to the depletion of natural resources and the recent trends towards higher machine speeds and larger sizes, considerations for safety and stable operation have led to a growing demand for alternatives to stone rolls. In recent years, society has been actively moving towards the reuse of various materials for the sake of environmental protection. In the paper industry, there has been a vigorous movement to increase the ratio of recycled paper in terms of raw material reuse. However, the reality is that the recycled paper actually used often comes from overseas or has been reused multiple times, leading to a decline in the quality of recycled paper. Consequently, a significant amount of pitch is generated during the paper-making process due to the mixing of this recycled paper into the raw materials. As a result, non-stick properties on the surface of each roll are required, and currently, a method of firing fluororesin on the surface after thermal spraying using a firing furnace is being employed as a countermeasure. However, this method poses issues such as high temperatures that can cause distortion or shaft displacement in the rolls, as well as the problem that on-site construction is impossible due to the use of a firing furnace. To address these issues, KBK has developed K-Stef® to solve these problems!

The "carrier sheave" has been made lighter to accommodate the increased speed of paper machines, resulting in a rise in aluminum usage. Due to aluminum's low hardness, the areas where the rope contacts wear out quickly, leading to issues such as creep in the bearing insertion area (outer ring). The "wire roll" experiences wear at the contact points of the wire ends, leading to a difference in peripheral speed, which also accelerates the wear of the wire itself. In recent years, paper companies have increased the proportion of recycled paper, leading to an increase in gum (pitch). When gum adheres to wires, felts, and canvases, operational efficiency deteriorates. The adhered gum can transfer to the rolls, accumulate, and adhere to the paper surface, potentially resulting in major complaints. Traditionally, we have been grinding the rolls of all sections to achieve the same outer diameter, which incurs significant costs. Therefore, at Kurashiki Boring Machine Works, we grind only the depth of the roll's damage and repair the dryer rolls by thermal spraying and polishing. In recent years, the application of thermal spraying to calender rolls has been increasing to prevent scratches on the rolls, upgrade the surface quality of paper, and address dirt issues. Reducing replacement costs through extending the polishing cycle is also a significant point. Furthermore, regarding surface quality, there are fewer scratches on the paper surface, leading to improved quality. With conventional chilled steel, scratches occurred during paper passage due to paper breaks and debris from the doctor blade.
