We would like to introduce a case study on the implementation of our smartphone IP radio 'Buddycom'. JAL Engineering Co., Ltd. was using dedicated IP radios, but the radios were large and heavy, making them a burden for the maintenance staff who had to carry them. Since the maintenance staff already had smartphones for sharing maintenance information, they considered adopting our product as it could provide similar communication capabilities as the radios. At Tokai Railway Company, when sharing information, they used business mobile phones and PHS devices installed in vehicles, which involved one-on-one conversations. This posed challenges, such as taking time for all crew members to share information and the potential for subtle differences in content during transmission. Therefore, upon learning that a group company of theirs had implemented our product as a means of information sharing, they considered that if they could similarly introduce it as an app for the crew, it would enable rapid information sharing without increasing the number of devices. They proceeded with the implementation. After the introduction, it became easier to share information among the crew and with the command center. Additionally, they could quickly coordinate with crew members of other trains without going through the command center, significantly improving their customer service capabilities.
