Machines often need to be sealed. The structures necessary for sealing can be derived from experience, but to some extent, they can also be calculated. For example, consider the O-ring, which is commonly used for sealing. When sealing with an O-ring of hardness A70 and a diameter of Φ2.4, approximately 3.2N/mm of force is required when compressed by 0.7mm (this can be confirmed through JIS standards or manufacturer catalogs). When designing a new structure for bolting flanges together, what should the bolt size, number, and tightening torque be? Alternatively, welding may be performed for sealing. While this may be sufficient for sealing alone, will the strength be adequate when subjected to pressure from the inside?
