Machines often need to be sealed. The structures necessary for sealing can be derived from experience, but to some extent, they can also be calculated. For example, consider the O-ring, which is commonly used for sealing. When sealing with an O-ring of hardness A70 and a diameter of Φ2.4, approximately 3.2N/mm of force is required when compressed by 0.7mm (this can be confirmed through JIS standards or manufacturer catalogs). When designing a new structure for bolting flanges together, what should the bolt size, number, and tightening torque be? Alternatively, welding may be performed for sealing.
