In the food, chemical, and pharmaceutical industries, spray dryers always carry the risk of explosion. Typically, a dispersed atmosphere of flammable dust and oxygen is always present. Spray dryers should not be regarded as standalone equipment components but rather evaluated as part of a cohesive complex system. The explosion-proof specifications for spray dryers are specially defined based on VDI 2263 part 7. If certain process conditions are met, appropriate application of this directive can minimize countermeasures. Common causes of combustion in spray dryers include smoldering, damage to rotating nozzles, high-temperature bearings, and sparks due to imbalance.

Silos are very important equipment that require explosion protection. Many ignition sources, such as high-temperature surfaces, electrical equipment, static electricity accumulation and discharge, sparks released by metal foreign objects during air filling, or even the spontaneous ignition of simply bioactive substances, increase the risk of explosion. If it is not possible to eliminate all potential ignition sources, it is necessary to structurally protect the silo. This includes explosion venting devices (such as EGV type) that can be assembled on outdoor silos, as well as frameless explosion venting devices (such as Q-Box / Q-Rohr) and explosion suppression (Q-Bic) for indoor use. We provide sanitary explosion isolation valves for food and pharmaceutical processes. For processes that require sanitation, explosion venting devices certified by EHEDG, such as the EGV HYP type, and the Q-Rohr combined with the sanitary explosion venting device ERO type, are suitable for explosion protection. In some processes, preventive measures can also be taken. For example, as a preventive safety measure to prevent the entry of ignition sources into the silo, a remotely operated fire extinguisher or a wireless detector combined with an explosion isolation valve can be used. Due to the high frequency of explosion accidents involving dust collection systems, many dust collector manufacturers install explosion-proof devices. The risk of explosion arises not only from dust generated by other equipment but also from sparks and smoldering. A particular concern is the cleaning of filter elements. Very fine dust can spread uniformly within the dust collector, potentially leading to an explosion when combined with an ignition source. Therefore, indoor dust collectors are equipped with frameless explosion venting devices such as Q-Box and Q-Rohr for venting. Furthermore, in the case of hazardous materials, the use of Q-Bic can also help suppress explosions. Outdoor dust collectors can be protected with explosion vents if they are in a ventable environment. The selection of explosion vents varies depending on the installation conditions of the dust collector. If transportation or traffic routes are near the explosion vent, TARGO-VENT type deflection plates are used to direct the flames and shock waves from an explosion to designated areas.
