In addition to pipe rehabilitation, there is the "NMR method," which uses our internal rust prevention device, the "NMR Pipe Protector," to reduce red rust to insoluble and passive black rust. Vinyl-lined steel pipes are commonly used for condominium water supply (distribution) piping, where the straight sections do not deteriorate from red rust, but only the joints do. By converting this red rust to black rust, pipe replacement becomes unnecessary, reducing costs to 1/5 to 1/10. In the year 2000, at a major DPE factory that was 35 years old at the time, the pipe lifespan was diagnosed to be 2 months, and our 'NMR Pipe Protector' was introduced into the water supply piping. The iron content in the water that had been stagnant overnight was 0.5 mg/L before the introduction, which was unsuitable for water used in DPE. However, just 6 days after the introduction of our product, the iron content in the water decreased to less than 0.05 mg/L, a tenth of the previous level, due to the black rust formation from red rust. Since then, the water quality has further improved, with the iron content in the water dropping to below 0.03 mg/L, confirming the effectiveness of red rust prevention. To extend the lifespan of existing piping to match the lifespan of the building, if the red rust occurring inside the pipes can be converted to black rust without flushing it away, the lifespan of the pipes can be prolonged to that of the building. When extending the lifespan of pipes, methods such as pipe cleaning or sandblasting to remove red rust can damage the interior of the pipes, reducing their strength. With our internal red rust prevention device, the 'NMR Pipe Protector,' red rust can be converted to black rust without directly contacting the water inside the pipes. By utilizing NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance), it is possible to prevent the deterioration of red rust inside the pipes and even rehabilitate and strengthen the pipes. On January 12, 2007, in one of the six pump rooms located within Buckingham Palace, only one pump room supplying Her Majesty's room had the 'NMR Pipe Protector' installed for the air conditioning hot water piping and the hot water supply piping. Before the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, the iron ion concentration in the circulating hot water within the air conditioning hot water piping for Her Majesty's room was measured at 16.6 mg/L, indicating a high iron ion level and a significant presence of red rust within the piping. Subsequently, 24 days after the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, the iron content in the hot water within the air conditioning hot water piping decreased to 0.455 mg/L. In August 2001, we introduced the "NMR Pipe Protector" to the Co-op Nomura Minami Ishikiri condominium in Wakabayashi Ward, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. After 15 years of implementation, an investigation into the deterioration of the piping was conducted. The investigation involved removing the water supply pipes on the secondary side of the elevated water tank and inside the residences, as well as the drainage pipes. It was evaluated that "there was almost no red rust due to internal deterioration of the water supply pipes, and there were no blockages; it was confirmed that the surface had turned black due to rust, and pipe rehabilitation had been carried out." The condominium's maintenance director stated during an interview, "Not only the water supply pipes but also the drainage pipes have been extended in their lifespan, and there are no plans for updates in the long-term repair plan." The red rust prevention device for piping, "NMR Pipe Protector," has obtained patents and registrations in the United States and major countries around the world after undergoing rigorous patent examinations abroad regarding its practicality and other factors. On February 16, 2004, the first installation in the UK was at Addenbrooke's Hospital, affiliated with the University of Cambridge. The NMR Pipe Protector holds a patent in the UK and established its reliability through presentations at conferences related to "corrosion," leading to its installation upon recommendation from the University of Cambridge. The hot water pipes at Addenbrooke's Hospital experienced leaks due to bacterial corrosion and red rust deterioration just three years after the piping was updated. However, after the installation of the NMR Pipe Protector, red rust in the hot water piping made of galvanized steel was prevented in just 11 days. The iron ion concentration due to red rust in the hot water decreased from 1.07 mg/L before installation to 0.188 mg/L after 11 days, falling below the water quality standard of 0.2 mg/L. The transformation of red rust in the hot water pipes to black rust with a volume reduction to one-tenth confirmed the rust prevention effect of the NMR Pipe Protector.
