The lack of a functional vascular system in artificial grafts poses a significant barrier. This combination of critical elements enables cells to initiate communication and begin forming vascular structures with characteristics similar to biological blood vessels within weeks. Once the vessels are formed, they can exchange nutrients and waste, sustaining the survival of the graft. Introducing bio-printing technology for 3D heart models designed for personalized medicine and transplantation.

In Dr. Carmine Gentile's laboratory in Sydney, research is being conducted to develop bio-printed heart tissue using patient-specific cells to minimize the risk of transplant rejection. In a 2020 study, mouse cells were bio-printed using alginate-gelatin hydrogel with CELLINK's "BIO X." The bio-printed heart cells were cultured for 7 to 14 days until they developed into pulsating patches of heart tissue. During open-heart surgery on mice from which the cells were derived, the vascularized heart patches were transplanted into the damaged areas of the heart. The transplantation aimed to test the safety of the bio-printed patches and confirm their positive effects on heart function, both of which were validated.
