[Key Lecture Content]
The impact of the disruption in the semiconductor supply chain that began in 2020 on various industries has been extremely significant. The Japanese government has taken various measures, including attracting TSMC to Kumamoto. Additionally, there is a growing recognition, including among government, industry, and academia, that semiconductors are a strategic resource with a substantial ripple effect across industries, which has led to significant investments by the government in Rapidus. On the other hand, Japan's share of the semiconductor market has been declining since the 1990s, and its recovery is not something that can be achieved overnight. In this lecture, I hope to provide an overview of the current state of Japan's semiconductor industry by looking at the semiconductor value chain from a broader perspective and to outline the necessary measures for its revitalization.
