In the EU, over 10,000 two-seater ultra-compact EVs are sold annually. They are available from multiple brands within the region and can be driven without a license by individuals aged 14 or 15 and older, being recognized as a new mode of transportation. To accommodate weight reduction, all body panels are made of resin, and only unpainted versions were produced to reduce costs.
In Japan, single-seater, so-called light four-wheeled vehicles are widely used for home delivery of dairy products and as on-site vehicles. Additionally, two-seater or four-seater ultra-compact EVs are offered as car-sharing options. Several companies are developing these vehicles domestically, and they are nearing release. Our local research estimates that small EVs are in a growth phase in China's regional cities and Southeast Asia. On the other hand, there are vehicles in Japan that have ceased production in less than three years since their release, indicating some challenges.
While they are expected to be a convenient and accessible new mode of transportation that contributes to decarbonization, there are also challenges related to price versus functionality and regulatory compliance. Based on extensive test drives and real vehicle confirmations, we will explain the possibilities and challenges.
