[Seminar] Trends in Docomo's vRAN Implementation and the Evolution of Base Stations at the Forefront of Standardization

Traditionally, base stations were highly complex devices that required the deployment of dedicated equipment at thousands of distributed locations to meet the real-time processing demands unique to wireless technology, necessitating specialized maintenance methods to operate a large number of devices. With the evolution of virtualization technology and accelerators, vRAN, which virtualizes base stations using general-purpose equipment, has been realized, significantly transforming the operational methods of mobile operators from construction to fault response.
In this lecture, we will introduce examples of vRAN implementation, explain the forefront of O-RAN standardization that contributed to the realization of vRAN, and discuss the challenges faced by mobile operators and their solutions through the case study of Docomo.
