3D measurement of the gap in the steering wheel exterior | SRI8020

Non-contact measurement of the seams on the complex curved surface of a steering wheel exterior. We present a case study of gap measurement between housings using the SinceVision SRI8020 integrated 3D laser profiler.
In exterior shapes designed with ergonomics in mind, seams become three-dimensional curves, making it difficult to measure widths with calipers or contact gauges. In this case study, we captured the target shape through laser scanning and calculated the gap width from the 3D contour image. We confirmed the assembly state of areas where curvature changes and utilized this for process adjustments.
We acquired contour data of 3,200 points in the X direction, capturing the shape of complex curved surfaces in detail. With a scanning capability of up to 67,000 Hz, we support rapid measurements in mass production processes. Even shapes that are difficult to handle with contact tools can be evaluated for dimensions based on 3D data.
If you are considering seam management for steering wheels or gap inspection for exterior parts, please let us know the target curved surface, measurement locations, tolerances, and required takt time. We will propose measurement methods aimed at confirming assembly quality and improving production process efficiency.
