The RoHS Directive is a regulation that strictly limits the presence of specific hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment within the member states of the European Union (EU), due to concerns about their impact on human health and the environment. The products subject to this regulation are electrical and electronic equipment manufactured and sold within the EU member states, including imported goods. The substances whose presence is restricted include four types of heavy metals: lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium, as well as a total of ten substances, which include four flame retardants: polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), and phthalate esters. This regulation has been in effect since July 1, 2006, in all EU member countries.
