■Main Targets of ATP Swab Testing The ATP swab testing method measures not only microorganisms but all biological substances (organic matter). In manufacturing sites such as food factories, it is considered important to take ATP testing into account, as biological contamination can promote the growth of microorganisms. While regular sterilization is effective against surface microorganisms, if there are cleaning residues, it may not eliminate the microorganisms inside the residues, allowing the remaining microorganisms to proliferate using those residues as nutrients. This issue may be overlooked, especially in microbial testing using the stamping method, which targets surface bacteria. Additionally, microbial testing requires more than 24 hours to obtain results after culturing, making it difficult to directly link results to countermeasures. In contrast, "ATP swab testing," which targets ATP levels (biological substances), provides immediate and simple results regarding biological contamination, allowing for on-the-spot corrective measures or re-cleaning. Facilities are increasingly implementing hygiene management by focusing on key points of secondary contamination, such as doorknobs, handrails, beds, and switches in hospitals and public facilities where a large number of people intersect.
