The red substance in the title photo is a liquid that consists of a red dye mixed with an oil-based penetrant known as a penetrant solution. This liquid is very fluid and has high penetrability, allowing it to seep into fine gaps, such as cracks in the test object, through the principle of capillary action. The penetrant solution is applied to the test object and left for a specified period, after which the penetrant is removed. Next, as shown in the lower photo (detailed information section), a solvent-based spray containing very fine white particles known as a developer is applied to the test object. This time, the penetrant that had seeped into the flaws is drawn out by capillary action into the spaces between the fine particles of the developer. Since the surface of the test object becomes white due to the developer, the red penetrant is drawn out onto this white surface, creating a very clear contrast between white and red, making the flaws easily visible to the naked eye. There are several methods for this testing, including different types of penetrants (dye, fluorescent types), methods for removing the penetrant (solvent removal, water washing), and types of developers (wet, dry, fast-drying), and the appropriate method is selected based on the test object and inspection environment.

The penetrant testing examines surface-opened defects, so in the case of welded pipe fittings, it is often used primarily for testing the beveling of pipe ends (the machined area for butt welding) and the longitudinal weld seams during the manufacturing of large-diameter fittings.
