The inherent molecular vibration spectrum (Raman spectrum) of low molecular weight compounds was measured, and the shape of that spectrum was used as a marker. As a method for measuring this molecular vibration spectrum, we developed a "phase-controlled coherent Raman microscopy" that uses pulse laser light with manipulated spectral phases, achieving high sensitivity. It has become possible to detect molecular vibration spectra in small frequency regions, which was previously difficult, with high sensitivity.

Technical Overview This technology enables the three-dimensional imaging of the localization distribution of small molecular compounds whose properties change when labeled with fluorescent dyes, by identifying molecular structures through induced Raman scattering under a microscope. Unlike commercially available Raman microscopes, this system detects high-intensity induced Raman scattering light, which is advantageous for depth-direction tomography. To make the coherent Raman microscope operable by non-specialist users, the light source has been integrated, and it has been commercialized as an all-in-one measurement device. Highlights of the Exhibition The actual device will be used to demonstrate the measurement procedures for inhalation anesthetic molecules, steroid molecules, amino acids and amino acid derivatives, vitamins, and other samples, presented through video explanations. The panel will explain a successful case where the cornea of a mouse eye was immersed in a taurine solution, which is also included in eye drops, and the concentration distribution within the cornea was detected.
