It is an effective testing method for clear coats and other materials that are difficult to evaluate in pencil hardness tests.
This testing device measures the resistance of a coating film to penetration by scratching with a needle that has a hemispherical tip. It is also known as a scratch tester. A scratching needle (hemispherical with a diameter of 1mm) is set vertically against the test plate, and the test plate holder moves laterally at a speed of 30 to 40 mm/s. The penetration of the coating film is indicated when the needle and the metal substrate become electrically conductive. The display screen shows a real-time graph during measurement, and a buzzer sounds when penetration occurs. The test results are displayed on the screen as "OK" or "NG." Weights included with the device can be placed on top of the needle, allowing measurements under different loads. Since evaluation can be performed based on the penetration of the coating film, more accurate and reproducible hardness management can be achieved.

We will confirm that there is no dirt on the needle. Attach the test plate to the test plate holder and place the included weights on the platform above the needle to apply the specified load. Press "Test" on the touch panel screen to activate it and create a scratch on the coating. During the test, you can check whether the needle and the test plate are conducting electricity through the graph on the display screen and the buzzer. Press "Return" on the touch panel screen to revert to the pre-test state and remove the test plate. There are two methods for evaluating the test. In the case of a single specified load (pass/fail test), we examine whether the coating has penetrated to the specified range by checking the scratch. When measuring the minimum load that causes penetration, we use different parts of the test plate, starting from a smaller load that is expected to cause penetration in the coating, and gradually increase the load on the needle until penetration occurs, recording the minimum load that penetrates the coating.

It is used for measuring the hardness of paint films. Additionally, it is effective for evaluating the hardness of hard coatings on films, the hardness of resins, coatings on lenses, and various other coatings. Since the hardness is measured through penetration of the film, it is effective even for clear coats that are difficult to assess using pencil hardness and similar methods.
