Introducing basic knowledge about the habits and breeding season of sparrows!

Sparrows are about 15 cm in length and are sexually monomorphic. They can be found throughout almost all of Japan, but are not seen in the Ogasawara Islands. They are widely distributed around the world, primarily centered on the Eurasian continent, and are commonly seen in areas inhabited by humans, from grasslands and agricultural fields to urban areas, making them birds that are closely associated with humans. Their diet is omnivorous, feeding on seeds of plants, mainly from the grass family, and insects. Sparrows in urban areas eat everything from kitchen scraps to candy wrappers. They are considered pests because they consume grains, and farmers have viewed them as enemies; however, during the breeding season, they prey on insects, reducing pest populations, and they also eat weed seeds, contributing to agriculture. In China, a plan was implemented in 1955 to eradicate sparrows along with rats, flies, and mosquitoes, resulting in the capture of over 1.1 billion sparrows in a year. However, it is said that as a result, pest populations increased, leading to nationwide crop failures. Additionally, they are known to carry harmful bacteria, to the extent that they are referred to as "flying rats."
