Expansion joints (flexible joints/rubber joints) are used to prevent vibrations and noise generated from piping systems, absorb expansion and displacement due to temperature and pressure changes, as well as to accommodate various dimensional fluctuations during construction and mitigate or prevent the effects of earthquakes and ground subsidence. They are considered essential components in piping installations. The E-P joint was launched in 1970 (Showa 45) as a low-pressure R type for elevated water tanks.
