This is a wavelength plate made from two thin slices. It is used to introduce a phase difference between two orthogonal polarization components and to change the state of incident polarized light. There are λ/2 plates and λ/4 plates; the λ/2 plate shifts the phase difference by λ/2 (180°) and rotates the incident linear polarization.
