A right-angle prism is used to achieve 90° total internal reflection (TIR) by utilizing the hypotenuse surface. It is preferred over inclined mirrors in applications where acoustic or inertial loads are stringent, as it is easy to install and deforms much less than mirrors under external mechanical stress. As long as the angle of incidence does not exceed the limit for TIR from the roof surface, the right-angle prism can also function as a retroreflector, returning the beam to its original direction. - 45-45-90° prism - Usable as an internal or external reflector Various HR or AR coatings are also available.
