Sulfides can naturally be present in well water and often accumulate in drainage systems due to anaerobic conditions. Furthermore, sulfides are used in mercury removal processes and are found in large quantities in tanning waste. In drinking water systems, sulfides can cause taste and odor issues. In drainage systems, sulfides can damage concrete structures and lead to odor problems in treatment facilities. The measurement of dissolved sulfide concentration has primarily been conducted using analytical devices that employ ion-selective electrodes (ISE) for sensing. While ion-selective electrodes have sufficient sensitivity, frequent zero and span adjustments are necessary to maintain measurement accuracy. As a result, most ISE-based monitoring systems are relatively expensive and require frequent servicing. The ATI Q46S/81 dissolved sulfide monitor offers an improved method for measuring sulfides.

Well Water: There are areas where groundwater contains sulfides and cannot be used without treatment. Sulfides can be removed using air stripping systems or oxidative decomposition methods. Q46S/81 can measure both the sulfide levels in the raw water and the residual concentrations after treatment. Wastewater: Sulfides in wastewater collection systems can cause serious damage to concrete structures. They may not always be present continuously, but sulfides can be detected when oxidative decomposition methods using hydrogen peroxide or biological nitrate treatment systems are in operation. Tanned Leather Waste: In leather production, high concentrations of sulfides are generated. While it is not possible to measure the high concentrations of sulfides before treatment, low concentrations of sulfides are measured after treatment.
