Escherichia coli develops as blue colonies, while other coliforms develop as blue to blue-green colonies. Counting the blue to blue-green colonies gives the coliform count, while counting only the blue colonies gives the Escherichia coli count. It has obtained international certifications MicroVal and AOAC-PTM. It is also included in the food hygiene inspection guidelines, which are considered the standard for food microbiological testing in Japan.
