Prospects for Optical Communication and Terahertz Systems and Devices for Ultra-High-Speed and Large-Capacity Transmission
Although 5G services have just begun, discussions about Beyond 5G and 6G are already gaining momentum. Beyond 5G/6G is expected to provide functionalities such as ultra-high-speed transmission at Tbps levels, connecting anywhere and to anything. It is crucial to highly integrate the wireless technologies that connect users to base stations with the optical fiber communication technologies that support the networks between base stations. Optical fiber communication is expanding its application range from long-distance communication connecting continents to communication within data centers and between chips. On the other hand, wireless communication is expanding due to its flexibility, but the existing radio frequency bands are already used for various services, making the scarcity of frequency resources a challenge. In this seminar, we would like to address technologies for integrating various transmission media, including wireless transmission technologies that comprehensively utilize not only microwaves, which have been widely used, but also the terahertz band, from the perspective of hardware and manufacturing.
