This book corresponds to the revised edition of "Composition, Characteristics, and New Processes of Lithium-Ion Electrodes," published by S&T Publishing Co., Ltd. (scheduled for release in November 2024) (Note from the editorial department: This is not an updated version. There are additions and deletions of figures and explanations compared to the previous edition). While the technical content of this book does not deny the current liquid electrolyte lithium-ion batteries, the limitations of liquid electrolytes are already becoming apparent. We must transition to solid electrolytes and simultaneously rationalize bipolar cell formation through the dry process of electrode drying. The classical wet electrode process, which has already become outdated, will only become a bottleneck for cost reduction, even if new gigacell factories are built. Although it is referred to as "electrode," the crucial positive electrode material only deals with the new sulfur positive electrode, while the negative electrode materials include LTO, NTO, silicon-based materials, and lithium metal. The performance enhancement of positive electrode materials has nearly reached a plateau, and improving the power characteristics (W/Kg, W/L) and cycle characteristics of the battery (cell) will likely depend on the selection and utilization of negative electrode materials. Many transient combinations that have not reached conclusions and whose evaluations are uncertain are also discussed. While some content may be quite ambitious, I hope it serves as a catalyst for discussion among readers. (Hidetaka Sugawara)

The packaging industry in Southeast Asia is gradually expanding as a whole market size. Originally centered around a "street food culture," it has taken a long time for "packaged processed foods" to grow. However, various packaging materials for processed foods, including barrier packaging, are now being introduced into the market. This report analyzes "film manufacturers," "converters," and "PET bottle resin manufacturers" that have entered the target countries as suppliers. In the Japanese market, packaging materials composed of transparent barrier films, including transparent vapor-deposited films, have grown to occupy a significant proportion. In contrast, Southeast Asia still heavily relies on aluminum-based barrier films (especially aluminum vapor-deposited films). There is also a persistent tendency to pursue metallic gloss over barrier properties. In China, a major packaging material country, the proportion of aluminum-based barrier films is overwhelmingly high. However, transparent vapor-deposited films and hybrid barrier-coated films are also rapidly emerging. It remains to be seen whether competition among transparent barrier films will intensify in China in the future.

- Thank you for your hard work enduring oxidation and reduction with the electrode binder; it's about time... - LFP → water-based coating, NCM → powder coating, solid-state → Fiber Fibrillation might be the main contenders? - The dry process is key to the productivity of widespread adoption. - Solid-state batteries seem to be compatible with the dry process. - Solid-state batteries theoretically do not require a binder, but there are other challenges... - Solid electrolytes and bipolar structures, will it be multiplication or addition? Looking forward to the future... - Is it possible to achieve a lithium-sulfur battery with a continuous electrode at the 500Wh/kg level? This book addresses the manufacturing of current lithium-ion batteries, focusing on the manufacturing process of the electrode plates, particularly the binder (adhesive, binding agent), chemical materials, process technology, and their new developments. For battery manufacturers, the wet binder and electrode manufacturing, which are considered dirty work, are areas they prefer to avoid. I have attempted to collect data and provide explanations in the hope that chemical engineering alumni can contribute, even if only slightly, to solving these issues. Please forgive any lack of clarity regarding the technical know-how of individual manufacturers. (“Introduction” by Shuichi Sugawara)

Retort pouch products have managed to maintain their distribution volume even in the context of the pandemic, which has led to longer hours spent at home. Furthermore, after the pandemic has somewhat subsided, a resurgence in growth rates is anticipated. In the Japanese market, high growth rates have been sustained for over a decade, but in the last 4 to 5 years, there has been a noticeable decline in growth rates compared to previous periods. However, it is expected that a steady recovery will occur in the future. It is worth noting that in 2023, following the pandemic, there was a slight increase in inventory due to a rebound from increased production anticipated by rising demand. Future growth rates are estimated to continue at 2-3% per year. In the case of the Japanese market, looking specifically at retort pouch products, particularly the overwhelmingly dominant "retort pouch food," there continues to be a trend of "slowing growth rates for aluminum foil-based retort pouches" and "advancements in growth rates for transparent barrier film-based retort pouches." Especially concerning the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, with the current emphasis on SDGs, transparent pouches are increasing in significance as environmentally friendly packaging. I hope this document serves as a helpful resource for the packaging industry and end-users in their business planning.

This book is envisioned as a "business resource collection" that broadly addresses the business needs and supply (demand and supply) aspects related to x/z EVs and lithium-ion batteries, while considering recent trends. It is not intended for the author to present conclusions or provide direction. The goal is to gather the most recent data in numerical form as much as possible, organize it chronologically, and provide it as a reference for the readers' action plans. In the first half, the focus is on BEVs, PHEVs, and HEVs, organizing and presenting the different contents of x/z EVs by country. A list of the goals for the abolition of ICEs by 2030 or 2035 is provided according to these classifications. Next, the manufacturing and sales performance by country and region is summarized based on the most recent 12 months of numerical data available. The significant gap between these figures and the final targets appears to be a barrier that will hinder progress moving forward. The challenge of addressing this gap varies widely depending on the country and automobile manufacturers, leading to many competitive and collaborative relationships emerging. The major BEV models from various companies have moved beyond the development stage and are now entering a phase of performance improvement and the development of uniqueness. The driving performance of major models from the 2022-23 period is compared, and various issues related to charging systems and safety are addressed.

As the trend towards decarbonization accelerates globally, hydrogen is gaining attention. In the short term, the utilization of blue hydrogen (fossil fuels + CCS) is expected, but in the long term, green hydrogen (derived from renewable energy) will also be required. Green hydrogen is primarily produced through Power to Gas, which needs to be understood in the context of the integration of renewable energy into the grid. In terms of hydrogen utilization, there are options beyond direct use of hydrogen, such as converting hydrogen into synthetic fuels. If synthetic fuels require CO2, this is also related to CCU (Carbon Capture and Utilization) and carbon recycling. In pursuit of carbon neutrality, this paper will introduce domestic and international trends regarding Power to Gas, synthetic fuels, and CCU, while exploring the potential and challenges of these technologies.

Wind power generation, unlike solar power generation, is an accumulation of manufacturing consisting of 20,000 parts such as wind turbines, bearings, gearboxes, and generators, with Japanese companies having strengths in materials and components, including carbon fiber used in wind turbines. However, the world's largest wind power generation country has shifted from the United States to China, which is focusing on nurturing domestic manufacturers. The rise of Chinese and Indian companies, along with the strengthening of offshore wind power projects by leading Western companies, has intensified competition in terms of improving generation efficiency and pricing in wind power. In Japan, some companies are withdrawing from the wind power business, and development has not progressed as expected due to regulations on time-consuming environmental assessments, site constraints, limitations on transmission system capacity, and fishing rights. However, following the Tokyo Olympics, there are high expectations for the growth of Japan's wind power market, which exceeds 1 trillion yen annually, as a key area of infrastructure strategy. This will provide a clear explanation of how onshore and offshore wind power will grow in Japan and globally, and the potential future business opportunities for Japanese companies.

This presentation is organized in a lecture format based on the main topics of the book "Supply Chain SC for EV Batteries and Battery Materials," which is scheduled to be published by S&T Publishing in early 2022. The research and drafting of this book have been underway since around the fall of 2021, but issues related to EVs, EV batteries, and the supply chain SC of their raw materials have emerged as significant challenges. Recent information highlights a major news item from Toyota Motor Corporation's announcement on December 14, regarding 3.5 million EVs by 2030. The batteries required for this will involve a new investment of 2 trillion yen, totaling 280 GWh. Not only Toyota, but Volkswagen has also announced plans to produce 240 GWh in-house. In this presentation, I would like to focus on the first part regarding the number of EVs by 2030/35 and the second part concerning battery production expansion plans. I will estimate the supply chain of battery components, including positive and negative electrode materials, as numerically as possible, and consider examples of mineral development for nickel and cobalt. Additionally, the selection of materials such as positive and negative electrodes seems to have shifted from a focus on cost reduction for batteries to a different trend. Furthermore, I would like to touch on the emergence of the materials market for new all-solid-state batteries.

Retort pouch products continue to see an increase in distribution volume in response to longer at-home time. In the Japanese market, they are regaining steady growth amid the current COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that at least until 2023, a growth rate of 2-3% per year is possible. In the case of the Japanese market, looking at the overwhelmingly central "retort pouch food," the growth rate of "transparent barrier film structured retort pouches" continues to progress. Additionally, in South Korea, pouch exports to countries like India are becoming more active beyond domestic demand. In Thailand, necessary quantities are supplemented through pouch imports, and by combining these, it serves as a "export base for retort pouch food (final products) to the world." In North America, the trend for retort sterilization has been "canned goods → rigid containers," but in recent years, pouch types have been reevaluated and continue to increase, particularly with a high proportion in baby food applications. In the European market, as a trial for achieving environmentally friendly pouches, "monomaterial pouches in pet food" have come to the forefront.

In recent years, plating technology has established its importance as a foundational technology in the electronics industry. In electronics such as semiconductor devices, high-frequency printed circuit boards, and MEMS, it is primarily utilized as a wiring formation technology. Additionally, lithography technology is necessary to form high-precision wiring and plug structures. This technology forms a plating layer limited to areas designed with a resist mask. The resist mask is also used as an etching mask. High precision of the resist mask is essential for controlling the wiring shape through plating. In this seminar, we will discuss the plating technology of wiring materials such as Cu and Ni, the basics of lithography technology, and the enhancement of resist mask precision. We will also explain troubleshooting methods for issues such as mask deformation and mask peeling. This course is designed to be easy to understand for beginners, allowing them to learn from the basics. Additionally, we will address daily troubleshooting consultations that participants may have.

Rolling bearings are sometimes referred to as the "rice of machines," analogous to the Japanese diet, and they are essential mechanical components in constructing mechanical systems. In mechanical design, selecting rolling bearings according to the specifications of the machinery is part of the job, but failing to understand the fundamental principles can lead to significant mistakes. Recently, as the control of motor rotation speed using inverters has become widespread, electrical corrosion has also been observed in household appliances. Electrical corrosion is not a form of mechanical damage. Moreover, the design of rolling bearings should not allow electricity to flow internally, so when electrical corrosion occurs, the cause is often unclear. This seminar will explain the conditions under which electrical corrosion occurs, the observation of the ridge mark growth process, and methods to prevent electrical corrosion. A seminar specifically focused on electrical corrosion in rolling bearings is rare, and I hope to make it a meaningful experience for all participants.

As a measure against the novel coronavirus, China and Germany have positioned a hydrogen society as a national strategy. By 2030, the domestic hydrogen market is expected to reach 1 trillion yen, and by 2050, the hydrogen infrastructure market, including hydrogen stations, fuel cell vehicles, and hydrogen power plants, is anticipated to be worth 8 trillion yen in Japan and 160 trillion yen globally, with a total market size of 270 trillion yen when including related markets, presenting significant business opportunities. On July 21, 2021, the Basic Energy Plan explicitly stated that ammonia and hydrogen, which do not emit carbon dioxide, would account for 1% of the power source composition. Ammonia, along with hydrogen, is expected to become a key energy source for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from coal-fired and natural gas-fired power generation. It is also predicted that by 2050, hydrogen energy will account for 24% of global energy demand. On the other hand, Honda has decided to stop selling fuel cell vehicles due to sales remaining at only 1,900 units. A leading expert in resource energy clearly explains the latest trends surrounding hydrogen energy, including home fuel cells, fuel cell vehicles, fuel cell trucks, fuel cell buses, hydrogen stations, and hydrogen power generation, as well as the opportunities and risks related to economic recovery measures and climate change strategies post-COVID.

This book focuses on the interconnection of electronic products that support various electronic systems required for CASE vehicles. The physical connections are still primarily dominated by connectors, and it is not an exaggeration to say that their reliability significantly affects the reliability of the vehicle. Therefore, we will focus on the topic of connecting electronic products, primarily explaining it from a hardware perspective. Chapter 1 provides an overview of in-vehicle reliability and the approach to addressing it. Chapter 2 covers a wide range of cutting-edge technologies required for connectors, from high-voltage connectors to those in the high-frequency domain, including basic technologies, contact materials, and surface plating techniques. Chapter 3 examines the technology and reliability related to component mounting techniques within each electronic product. First, it is essential to thoroughly understand the concepts and evaluation techniques for ensuring reliability in soldering technology. Building on that, we detail high-reliability design in the mounting technology of power devices used in inverters, which are key players in electrification. The recent trend shows that vehicle usage years are increasing, and electronic products are increasingly required to have longer lifespans. The longevity of solder joints is evolving not only in structural design and process implementation technologies but also in solder materials and the circuit board materials that house electronic components, with the results of various material research also being introduced.

Semiconductors and liquid crystal devices are manufactured by repeating the lithography process multiple times. During these dozens of repetitions, the need for cutting-edge fine patterns is limited to a few processes, such as the gate process, while the majority uses thicker line width patterns. Novolak resist is used for these thick patterns. Of course, depending on the device, chemical amplification resist for KrF (248 nm) may also be used here. Therefore, in semiconductor devices, while not all processes use thick line widths, novolak resist is still used, and in considerable amounts. Additionally, in emerging countries like China, semiconductor device manufacturing involves producing older generation devices, where novolak resist is naturally used. Furthermore, in liquid crystal manufacturing, novolak resist is used in all processes (5 processes). There seem to be device manufacturers that use 4 processes due to the use of halftone masks. The introduction of chemical amplification resist, which is high sensitivity and high resolution, is also being considered, but practical application has not been achieved due to the significantly larger substrate sizes compared to semiconductors and the difficulty in controlling the usage environment.

○Publication Date: January 10, 2020 ○Format: A5, 147 pages ○Price: 4,200 yen (excluding tax) → STbook member price: 3,990 yen (excluding tax) ○Author: Hiroshi Takiyama, Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology ○Purpose: Crystals can be relatively easily precipitated, but when trying to optimize crystal quality, such as purity and particle size distribution, it takes time to set operational conditions. Additionally, slight differences in operational methods can significantly impact crystal quality. Therefore, while crystals may be successfully precipitated in lab experiments, crystallization can become problematic in actual processes, leading to the perception that crystallization operations are difficult. The revised edition includes new chapters that explain the control of polymorphic crystallization, which is often problematic in crystallization practices, as well as the continuous flow production of crystal particle groups and methods for producing co-crystals as new crystalline materials. This textbook is designed for corporate researchers who have specialized in organic synthesis and are about to start crystallization, as well as students studying crystallization at universities, helping them understand crystallization operations and enhance the quality of crystal production.

The microwaveable package (packaging and containers for microwave heating and cooking food) has been steadily growing for at least the past decade due to its high functionality, and it is expected that the number of food items suitable for this packaging will continue to increase in the future. In particular, the number of items in "private brand (PB) foods," primarily from major distribution companies, continues to rise. This report aims to qualitatively and quantitatively clarify the trends in food items suitable for microwaveable packaging in Japan, as well as the current state and outlook of the packaging market categorized by material, function, and form. Furthermore, in the final chapter, it discusses how key suppliers such as major food machinery manufacturers, food manufacturers, and food packaging converters perceive retort microwaveable packaging in Western countries, where adoption has not yet become widespread, providing insights into both the current market and future prospects overseas.

The recent boom in autonomous driving can be said to be supported by the performance of Velodyne's LiDAR. Velodyne developed LiDAR at the request of a team from Stanford University to win an autonomous driving contest organized by the U.S. Department of Defense. After winning the Urban Challenge, the Stanford team moved to Google, where they established the de facto standard for current autonomous driving systems. In Japan, demonstrations of autonomous driving have also begun, with LiDAR playing a significant role. However, since there are no Japanese-made LiDAR systems, the ones being used are from Velodyne. Therefore, I conceived this book project to contribute to the development of LiDAR, which will be a key technology for autonomous driving in Japan. This book has been written by leading researchers and engineers in the field of LiDAR, covering everything from basic principles to applications. While it does not cover everything about LiDAR due to its emphasis on timeliness, it is believed that most of the major topics have been introduced. I hope this book will be of some reference to researchers and engineers involved with LiDAR.
